Horsetail stitch is used. Known by the Sui as the ‘evil knot’, horsehair from a horse’s tail is entangled with white threads to create a special embroidery thread. This thread is used to outline the embroidery pattern, and then the centre is filled and decorated with beautiful patterns using other embroidery techniques such as flat stitch, couched braid stitch, crossing stitch, slip stitch and disorder stitch. The creation of each baby carrying belt is extremely time consuming and laborious. Each belt symbolises fecundity, auspiciousness and longevity.
