（简）袖片主要为黑白色，蜡染和留白部分对比分明，蜡染图案集中在中间，上下则饰有白色的条纹，构图对称。此袖片运用了蜡染的制作技艺。蜡染即蜡画和染色，是延续千年的民间传统工艺。用蜡液在自织的白布上精心绘上图案，然后在蓝靛缸里浸染几次后捞出，放在锅里用开水煮去蜡质，再用水清洗浮色，即呈现出各种白色图案。蜡染的工艺十分费工费时，精致图案凸显制作者十分用心，把代代相传的传统工艺发扬光大。
(ENG) Batik sleeves: black and white. Batik and the sections that are intentionally left blank contrast with each other. Batik patterns are concentrated at the central part of the sleeves, while the top and bottom parts are symmetrically decorated with white stripes. Batik involves wax drawing and dyeing and is a traditional art that has been used by the Miao people for thousands of years. Creating a batik piece of clothing is time consuming, labour intensive and takes great skill. Firstly, wax is used to draw intricate patterns on self-weaved white cloth. The cloth is then immersed several times into a barrel of indigo blue dye and taken out. The cloth is then boiled to remove excess wax, and washed with water to reveal diverse white patterns. The art of batik has been passed down through many generations.

(ENG) Batik work: painted with large drawings of flowers and birds, the clean lines and exquisite details of this piece are realistic as well as artistic. Symmetrical composition of flowers and birds, with the pattern also having connotations of festivity and auspiciousness. Batik, a technique of beeswax drawing and dyeing, is usually to carefully sketch out patterns on a self-woven white cloth. The cloth is then dipped in a solution of blue indigo several times, then placed in boiling water to remove the wax-resistant dye. The batik process is very labour intensive and time consuming and is an art form that has been passed down from generation to generation.

（简）蜡画中间绘有鸟龙纹，外框则饰有方形和几何图案。此蜡画运用了蜡染的制作技艺。蜡画，即蜡染的第一步，铜质蜡刀蘸上枫蜡溶液于纯棉白布上绘制图案，少数民族女孩一般从6-7岁便开始学习画蜡，由家中母亲、外婆、奶奶等传授。蜡画图案的鸟龙纹屬於榕江地区蜡染风格，图案线条流畅细腻，灵动可爱，栩栩如生，需要长时间的学习和制作才可有此画蜡功底。
(ENG) Batik drawing: bird dragon pattern drawn in the middle, with squares and geometric patterns decorated on the borders of the drawing. Techniques of batik are used to produce this drawing. Batik drawing is the first step of batik. The copper wax knife is dipped in maple wax solution to draw patterns on white cotton cloth. Taught by the mother, grandmother and grandma, minority girls generally start to learn wax painting from the age of 6-7. The bird dragon pattern on the batik drawing belongs to the batik style in the Rongjiang area. The pattern is smooth, delicate, vibrant and realistic. The excellent skills of batik drawing require a long time to learn and practice.

（简）苗衣色彩鲜明，在红色底布上绣上青蓝、鹅黄、粉红等亮色，用色大胆、夺目活泼。此苗衣运用了平绣、叠绣和数纱绣。刺绣图案有水果和各种变形为花纹的蝴蝶，十分具想像力和创造力。 《枫木歌》描述道：从树心里生出「妹榜妹留」，妹榜妹留指的就是蝴蝶。蝴蝶逐渐长大，生下十二个蛋，由脊宇鸟抱了16年，孵出了雷公、水龙、老虎、水牛、蜈蚣、老蛇和苗族的祖先——姜央。蝴蝶纹代表苗族祖先，可见制作者表达了对祖先的崇敬与缅怀。
(ENG) Leishan old Miao coat: red base cloth with embroidered bright colours including blue, yellow and pink. The colours used are lively, bold and eye catching. Flat stitch, stack stitch and counted thread stitch are used. The imaginative and creative embroidered patterns include fruits and butterflies metamorphosed as flower patterns. Maple Song states: Mais Bangx Mais Lief (Mama butterfly) was born from the pith of a tree. Mais Bangx Mais Lief refers to a butterfly which gradually grew and laid twelve eggs which were then cared for by the Divine Bird for 16 years. Thunder god, water dragon, tiger, buffalo, centipede, old snake and the ancestor of the Miao, Jiang Yang, hatched from the eggs. The butterfly pattern represents the Miao’s ancestry and cultural heritage and expresses the crafter’s respect for and remembrance of their ancestors.

(ENG) Leishan Chinese characters clothing: red base fabric for the collar, shoulder area and sleeves, embroidered with Chinese characters. The characters are particularly dazzling and eye catching against the black cuffs and hem. Wrinkling stitch, stem stitch, counted thread stitch and stack stitch are used. Embroidered auspicious patterns include Shrivatsa, Shou and the Chinese text “功成精巧” , which means ‘achievement and exquisiteness’. Text embroidery is the most iconic feature of this piece. With great creativity and imagination, the creator has turned characters into patterns, such as the “福” character pressed into a triangle on the sleeves. This piece makes use of various stitching techniques with rich text messages and is a highly valuable part of the collection.

（简）文字衣整体为黑色，在袖子和领子饰有红色刺绣，有吉祥幸福之寓意。此文字衣运用了皱绣、剪贴绣、辫绣镶边、数纱绣、轴绣和叠绣。皱绣先取7-8-9颗丝线编制为一种特殊绣线，这种绣线宽而扁平，形同女孩子的发辫。将辫线折叠并固定，便形成一种立体并厚实的特殊绣线，再用绣线盘出各种图案，让刺绣与底布之间形成凹凸感，制造恍如浅浮雕的视觉效果。叠绣，又称堆绣，是将上过浆的轻薄丝绫面料裁剪折叠成细三角形，堆叠于底布之上，边堆边用针线固定，组合成矩形的饰片。该藏品采用了多种刺绣技艺，做工细致精巧，不可多得。
(ENG) Leishan Chinese characters clothing: mainly black with red embroideries stitched on the sleeves and collar, symbolising auspiciousness and happiness. Wrinkling stitch, appliqué, couched braid stitch rim, counted thread stitch, stem stitch and stack stitch are used. For the wrinkling stitch, 7 to 9 silk threads are first taken and woven into a special embroidery thread that is broad and flat, similar to a girl’s thickly braided hairstyle. The thread is folded in half and fixed with a silk thread through the middle. This creates a thick thread which could be used to embroider different patterns on the fabric. The embroidery stitched with this thread stands out against the flat garment, producing a bas-relief effect. Stack stitch, also known as pile stitch, is made by cutting and folding a piece of glued thin silk fabric into small triangular shapes. These small pieces are then stacked on top of the base cloth, with the sides fixed with needle and thread, to create a rectangular ornament. This item uses a variety of embroidery techniques and its intricate and exquisite workmanship make it a rarity.

(ENG) Leishan embroidered Miao coat: embroideries concentrated on the neckline, shoulder and sleeve areas. The rich embroidery patterns on the red base fabric are gorgeous and pleasing to behold. Couched braid stitch, stack stitch and counted thread stitch are used. Stack stitch, also known as pile stitch, is created by cutting and folding glued light silk fabric into small triangles. These triangles are then stacked on the base fabric and fixed with needle and thread to form a rectangular patch. The oblique striped pattern is also a form of an ancient circular letter pattern, often appearing as the main embroidery pattern of the Miao people in Leishan. The pattern loops repeatedly and continuously, symbolising long lasting wealth. This coat, with its rare patterns, rich composition and fine workmanship, is a highly valued part of the cultural heritage collection.

(ENG) Miao coat, predominantly black. The collar, shoulder areas and cuffs are decorated with embroideries. Yellow, green, pink and purple embroidery threads are used on the red base cloth, creating rich layers. Couched braid stitch and counted thread stitch are used. Miao of the Leishan area like to use red fabric to embroider their clothes while using embroidery threads of different shades of green, such as deep green, light green and soft green. This preference for a red base and green embroidery is commonly referred to as ‘red base and green flower’. The embroidery patterns are emphasised through the use of gorgeous, strong complementary colours.

Wrinkling stitch, couched braid stitch and slack stitch are used. Tilted shan pattern, which is also a type of circular letter pattern, is commonly used by the Miao in the Leishan region as the main placket pattern on their embroidered clothes. （简）苗衣的刺绣部分为红底绿花，即用红色底布和各种绿色丝线，如深绿、浅绿、嫩绿等，是典型的雷山服饰特点。此苗衣运用了缩宝绣、绞绣、叠绣和剪贴绣。缩宝绣和皱绣一样，绣线皆由特殊技法编制而成，再将编制好的丝线盘成一个一个的小圆宝，组合刺绣成各种花鸟和动物图案，令刺绣图案和底布之间形成凹凸感，产生浅浮雕效果。雷山地区服饰常以龙纹为主要图案，而该藏品的图案则以花果纹为主，有桃子、石榴，还有很多花蝶纹。另外在绞绣部分有很多汉族文化的图案，如中国八吉图案——盘长。这反映出苗族在生活中也吸收了很多汉族文化，虽无文字，但苗族妇女仍能用她们擅长的针线记录之。
(ENG) Leishan Miao coat: embroidery with typical Leishan ‘red base and green flower’, which refers to various shades of green threads, such as dark green, light green and tender green, used on top of a red base cloth. Double-twist knot stitch, couching stitch, stack stitch and appliqué are used. As with wrinkling stitch, the silk thread used for the double-twist knot stitch has to be first woven using a special technique. Woven silk threads are made into small rounded balls, then combined to form various flower, bird and animal patterns. With this bas-relief effect, the embroidery stands out against the flat garment. Leishan area clothing often uses dragon patterns as the main pattern, yet the pattern of this dress is mainly of flowers and fruits, with peaches, pomegranates and various flower and butterfly patterns. For the couching stitch, many patterns derived from the Han culture can be discerned, including the Chinese Baji pattern-Shrivatsa. Such similar patterns reflect that the Miao people have assimilated considerably with Han culture. Although there is no written text in the Miao dialect, Miao women creatively use their exceptional needlework to record their history.
