As described in the Maple Song: Mais Bangx Mais Lief (Mother butterfly) is born from the pith of the tree. Mais Bangx Mais Lief refers to a butterfly which gradually grew and gave birth to twelve eggs. The twelve eggs were then incubated by the divine bird for 16 years. Inside the rectangle are symmetrical Shrivatsa and butterfly flower patterns, The same exquisite and elegant Shrivatsa can be found surrounding the outside of the rectangle. Stack stitch, also known as pile stitch, is made by cutting and folding pieces of glued thin silk fabric onto small triangular shapes. These small pieces are then stacked on top of the base cloth, the sides sewn with needle and thread, and then combined into a rectangular ornament. Due to the lasting influence the Han’s culture has had on the Tujia, the latter’s embroidery style resembles that of the Han’s. Embroideries is concentrated at the centre and the hem is decorated with tassels. Metal gimp stitch is used. Metal gimp is a kind of metal embroidery, which is made in two steps. First, you need to make a primer that uses crossing stitch to embroider the pattern on the black cloth with white silk thread. This embroidery piece is called “Lao Mu Hua”; the second step is to cut the metal tin into thin slices and stitch them on the pattern. Each tin piece is sewed stitch by stitch, and the tassels are made by wrapping the tin pieces on the silk thread. This is very labour intensive as it takes 1-2 years to produce one piece of embroidery work.
