(ENG) Children’s overalls: decorated in fret, circular-letter and zig-zag patterns, stitched with blue and white threads. Both ancient and traditional, these Chinese geometric patterns first appeared on porcelain and bronze artifacts and signified auspiciousness and endless prosperity. These patterns are still commonly found on clothes of the Miao and the Dong today. The octagonal pattern indicates the long history of these ethnic minorities and reflects a minimalist view of the universe that was prevalent in the Dadukou cultural period. Traditional Chinese cultural symbols continue to be reflected in the unchanged production mode and lifestyles of ethnic minorities. The unchanged production mode and lifestyles of ethnic minorities are indispensable to the continuation of the traditional Chinese symbols. &#13;

(ENG) Dong baby carrying belt: red base cloth with densely stitched patterns. A bright green rhombus placed at the centre of the belt makes use of complementary colours and creates a stunning visual contrast against the base red cloth.  Couching stitch and patchwork stitch are used. Exquisite craftsmanship has gone into creating the symmetrical distribution of patterns and colours. Baby carrying belts are used by ethnic minorities to carry their children. They are often made using batik, brocade and embroidery techniques. Baby carrying belts are an important part of Guizhou ethnic minority clothing culture. Despite its age, this baby carrying belt is well preserved and is a rare and precious addition to the collection.&#13;

                <text>（简）老背扇绣有大幅红色刺绣，绣出了大自然一派生机盎然的景象。侗族也是刺绣技法相当丰富的少数民族，前面出现过刺花、彩锦、素锦等，现在这件背扇工艺又出现了侗族打籽绣，图案非常热闹，出现了许多的吉祥瑞兽，如凤凰、龙、麒麟、老蛇、羊，此外还有水、山、太阳、蝴蝶、鸟、花和房屋。图案中心用铜钱和双钩云纹将动植物们上下左右的进行对称分布，又运用不同的色彩和形态进行区分，呈现出了一种对称当中的不对称的视觉感受。此老背扇运用了打籽绣。侗族打籽绣先用丝线先将图案勾绣出轮廓，再用打籽绣技法填充轮廓内部。绣针从背面向正面刺上来后，将针尖在丝线底脚卷上两转，绕成颗粒状小圈，形成一粒籽，周而复始，直到这样的小籽密密麻麻布满整个图案内部，故而得名打籽绣。 &#13;

(ENG) Dong baby carrying belt: with large red embroidery which vividly imagined natural scene. The Dong is an ethnic minority with rich embroidery techniques. Satin stitch, coloured brocade, plain brocade are found in other Dong pieces, and this baby carrying belt used the Dong knot stitch. The embroidery pattern is very vibrant, with many auspicious beasts such as Phoenix, dragon, Kylin, old snake, sheep. There are also water, mountains, sun, butterflies, birds, flowers and houses. The centre of the pattern is decorated with copper coins and cloud patterns, symmetrically distributing the animals and plants in a vertical, left to right manner. Distinctive colours and shapes create a richly composed asymmetrical yet symmetrical visual experience. Dong knot stitch is used. The Dong knot stitch uses a silk thread to first outline a pattern before using the knot stitch technique to fill in the pattern. When making the knot stitch, the needle should be pierced from the back of the fabric to the front, and the tip of the needle should be looped twice on the bottom of the silk thread in a small granular circle to form a knot. This technique is repeated until the small knots densely cover the entire pattern, hence the name ‘knot stitch’.&#13;

(ENG) Dong tapestry: coloured brocade with darker coloured brocade flower pieces embellished with grass green, purple red and light orange to give an elegant, low-key aesthetic. The central brocade pattern is a large zigzag pattern, with different colours and line spacing to create a sense of layering. Patterns are diverse and reflect the artist’s creativity. The frame of the flower brocade uses various circular-letter patterns. The simplicity and neatness of the flower brocade frame complements the more detailed zigzag pattern. The Dong coloured brocade is an indispensable item in the lives of the Dong people. It is a material widely used to make clothes. In addition to the symmetrical and exquisite composition, the patterns are rich and varied.&#13;

Silk threads of purple, orange, green, bright pink, blue and other colours are used. These gorgeously colourful patterns are beautifully and prominently contrasted against the black background. &#13;

(ENG) Embroidered top: black with couching stitch embroidery decorations on the collar and cuffs. Golden yellow embroidery thread is used on the red base cloth to create a striking elegant effect. The Dong especially love stitching with golden coloured embroidery threads on black cloth as it complements the patterns, allowing them to be even more vibrant and beautiful. The embroidery patterns are neat and intricate, revealing the creator’s serious approach to the stitching and outstanding craftsmanship.&#13;

(ENG) Flower costume: predominantly black with embroideries on the cuffs and hem and equally distributed symmetrical thombuses. Dong satin stitch, flat stitch, counted thread stitch and crossing stitch are used to create a plain yet graceful costume. A circle, within which there are colourful symmetrical patterns, is decorated at the centre of each rhombus. Dong satin stitch is commonly found among the Guangxi, Hunan and Guizhou areas. It is a traditional craft Dong women pass down from generation to generation. Dong satin stitch embodies the Dong’s generous and gentle ethnic personality and uses traditional colour patterns. Patterns stitched are exquisite and elegant and have a unique charm.&#13;

(ENG) Dong vest: visually stunning and almost blinding central radiant orange- yellow embroidery. Satin stitch, flat stitch and counted thread stitch are used. The front embroidery features Chinese cloud and sun patterns as well as an as yet unverified pattern. Some speculate it might be an insect pattern, while others speculate it to be a swirl or even a dragon pattern. On the back, the sun is surrounded by five birds. The inner part of the birds are embroidered with different triangular patterns using flat stitch. All the outliers of the animals and patterns are covered with embroidery resembling rays of light, creating a stunning visual effect. Over the last 40 years, we have only seen one similar piece of clothing. Why do creators choose to use this kind of embroidery to express their thoughts, and when were such embroidery patterns created? What does the embroidery symbolize? With its unique pattern and technique, is this piece unique or [does it represent a greater inheritance and death]? There are still so many questions yet to be answered.  &#13;
